Charging fees: How the MuchLoved Charitable Trust Works

1 February 2023

We're often asked if we charge fees on our transactions. The short answer is yes we do. But please hear us out.

Why do we charge fees?

MuchLoved has been a registered charity since 2007, working hard to support as many bereaved people as possible via our online bereavement care services, to help them cope with their own grief. We work directly with bereaved people, as well as with funeral organisations, charities and social groups large and small to achieve this goal.

Individual users who set up a tribute page will never be charged for having their page. It is an enduring page - theirs for life to personalise, develop and keep, with pictures and memories, and unless they want a little more space to add several particularly large video files* it’s entirely free. Forever.

We do charge transactional fees when we process donations to other charities or good causes. This is how we are sustainable as a charity, and the fees that we charge are used to run, administer and improve our services.

Our online donation processing service is run strictly on a not-for-profit basis and there are no hidden charges or fees.

We update our service continuously, and try and innovate to make sure we can give our partners, and the people they care for, the best possible service and support.

We are a small, lean charity, and make sure to use our funds wisely. We were founded by our Chief Executive Jonathan Davies when he himself was devastated by bereavement, and the people who need our services and our support are at the heart of everything we do.

*We provide 200mb of storage space for free automatically with each tribute page, and it costs just 99p for each further 50mb if you do want to add lots of video or multimedia files.

What are the fees? (Updated 1st February 2023)

MuchLoved’s fees are 3.2% of the donation and any additional Gift Aid that we reclaim from HMRC, plus the payment processing fee of 1.9% + 20p which includes all third party provider fees (for example Visa or Mastercard). The payment processing fee is not charged on Gift Aid and fees are deducted from the donation, not an added extra charge on top.

For example:

£10 Donation + Gift Aid
Donation amount£10.00
Fees: (3.2% MuchLoved & 1.9%+20p card fees)-£0.71
Gift Aid reclaim (25% of the donation amount) £2.50
Gift Aid reclaim processing fee: (3.2% of £2.50)-£0.08
Total fees deducted-£0.79
Total donated to charity inc Gift Aid£11.71

How do we stack up?

While we’re the only UK charity that pioneered online tributes to provide improved bereavement support, we know that there are other options available for donating in memory. We're very happy to share a comparison of how we stack up against companies that offer their own donation processing facility, so please do get in touch if you would like to know more.

Our mission as a charity is to offer you the best possible tribute service and to be your ethical choice, while at the same time minimising the fees necessary to achieve this. We work towards this goal every day and welcome any feedback or suggestions on how we can further improve our service. Thank you for your support.
